Students today have a completely different worldview than students of ten years ago. Today's students are highly in tune with the newest, latest, and greatest gadgets, gizmos and whatnot's. As a teacher, how many times have you found yourself asking one of your students for technical help on basic computing and internet savvy?
Because students are so much more well versed than their teacher counterparts, how can we utilize the vast potential in our ever changing technologies to stimulate and educate our students? A better question for many teachers might be if can we catch up to today's youth in technology. As a teacher, is the world of technology a runaway train, or a trainable tiger?

Hi Craig! I'm going to have to go with "trainable tiger." I've been teaching and using technology for over 20 years, and you're definitely right...kids tend to be more tech savvy than their teachers...because it's what they know! But, they love to share what they know and they're great teachers. We can all learn from each other. It's all about how we approach it!
ReplyDeleteHi Craig:
ReplyDeleteI am going to have to go with trainable tiger. But in order to train a tiger we have to know the characteristics of the tiger and what methods or tools to use to train the tiger effectively.
This is also true for teaching our students the effective use of technology while still covering the standards required for our subject area. Also as Susan says some of our students do know quite a lot about various technological tools and they are willing to help us out when we are unsure.
I still believe however to effectively implement technology in our lessons we need to go in with some knowledge of what we are doing.
I am a trainable tiger but when I get frustrated, look out for my roar! I hope to learn more about technology so I can be helpful to my students. I also want to help my coworkers when they get stuck! This process is a journey so I will just keep putting one foot in front of the other!
